For Frieze Seoul 2022 , Empty Gallery will present works by Cici Wu, Tishan Hsu, and Taro Masushio, who we are introducing to Korean audiences for the first time, as well as Vunkwan Tam, a young artist from Hong Kong whose debut solo exhibition, F, has recently opened. Wu, Hsu, Masushio and Tam all deal with the intersection between technological modernity, imperialist legacies, and contemporary East Asian identity in important ways.

Our booth includes Cici Wu’s new works on paper exploring an alternative early cinema, alongside Taro Masushio’s photographs conjuring the specter of Jun’ichi En’ya. Known colloquially known as the Uncle from Osaka, En’ya’s vast archive of homoerotic photographs was one of the first of its kind in Japan. We will also exhibit a sculpture by Vunkwan Tam, whose arrangements of deracinated readymade objects probe at layers of communal affect. Two pieces by Tishan Hsu are his first since his recent inclusion in the 59th Venice Biennale, and foreshadow the direction his work is taking for his upcoming second solo exhibition with Empty in March 2023.

Alongside Frieze Seoul, Tishan Hsu’s work is included in Cloud Walkers, opening on September 2 at the Leeum Museum of Art, curated by June Young Kwak.
