ektor garcia, Ruth Asawa and a brief history of crochet
ektor garcia, Ruth Asawa
In addition to two gallery tours of our exhibition “ektor garcia: Oax.D.F.L.A.N.O.H.K.” at 2:30pm and 4:00pm (English), our gallery associate Kaitlin Chan will present a talk at 3:00pm on ektor garcia’s practice of crotchet and fiber arts, tracing the history of weaving through pre-Hispanic Mexico, Europe and finally to the United States. Examining garcia’s practice alongside pioneering Japanese-American copper-wire crochet artist Ruth Asawa, the presentation asks questions about how crochet is specifically refracted through colonization, gender and sexuality, as well as highlight garcia’s practice and works on the last day of his solo presentation at Empty Gallery.
