LIVE@TEG

Ninos Du Brasil, Eli Kezler, Rashad Becker, NHK’KOYXEN, Lorenzo Senni, Gábor Lázár & Mark Fell

LIVE@TEG is an experimental concert series founded in response to Hong Kong’s persistent lack of a dedicated space for experimental music. Unrestricted by genre boundaries, we aim to bring musicians from diverse traditions such as free jazz/improv, modern composition, noise, world music, avant rock, myriad forms of electronic music and more to come perform in Hong Kong and connect with the local music scene.

ELI KESZLER

Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, Eli Keszler began playing drums at eight, composing at twelve, and playing in rock and hardcore bands throughout his teens. Now based in New York City, his work retains an intense physicality and ferocious energy developed from these early experiences. Keszler’s installa- tions and visual work often use microprocessor-controlled motors to strike, scrape and vibrate vari- ous lengths of piano wire as well as other materials. His projects deal with bordering spaces between architectural space and performance – installation and composition. These installations can be heard both autonomously and with accompanying ensemble scores or solo performance featuring Keszler’s jarringly rhythmic and propulsive drumming.

He has released material on ESP-DISK, PAN, and his own REL records, among others.

RASHAD BECKER

“Becker’s name will be known to a lot of people – indeed it appears on many, many records – but his music won’t be. His day job is as the mastering and cutting engineer in Berlin’s world-famous Dubplates and Mastering. Before he got the D&M gig, he was originally a musician in his own right, and he con- tinues with this as an irregular sideline, making and manipulating loops and electronic sounds. What wasn’t a surprise about his performance was how precise it all looked and sounded as he carefully twisted dials to produce a sequence of very crisp and discrete tones, sparse and improvisational …… What was more unexpected was just how conversational it all sounded. Most of the frequencies used were within the range of the human voice – it sounded like a long stream-of-consciousness sentence made up short syllables, electronic oohs and wahs, sections of muttering, and occasionally bickering. Whatever he does, it seems Becker has the knack of giving sound its voice.” Source: The Liminal

Rashad Becker’s most recent album Traditional Music of Notional Species Vol. 1 was released by PAN in 2013.

NINOS DU BRASIL

Ninos Du Brasil is a project whose origins and background have remained shrouded in mystery. Dedi- cated to a bold and unlikely mixture of noise, batucada, samba and electronic, their sporadic live ap- pearances have already become legendary and mythological.

For those fortunate enough to have witnessed Ninos Du Brasil live, their stories comprise of other- worldly experiences. NDB’s condensed yet intense set is a fervent intermixture of old school techno, stadium spirit choruses, Carnival style parade celebrations uni ed with the physical intensity of old school hardcore shows.

Be it a punk squat in Belgium or the famous Venice Biennale of Architecture, Ninos Du Brasil, without fail, rally the troops, from every walk of life, and create some of the biggest festival style parties on the dance oor.

Ninos Du Brasil have releases out on Hospital Productions, Ultra Eczema, and DFA.

NHK’KOYXEN

Born in Osaka, Kouhei Matsunaga is a musician and an illustrator. He grew up listening to hardcore- techno and hip hop, studied architecture and has been mainly making music since 1992. Under many di erent aliases (NHK, NHKyx, Internet Magic, Koyxen) he has released numerous albums on labels such as Skam Records, Wordsound, Raster Noton and his rst ever album “Upside Down” on Mille Pla- teaux in 1998.

NHK’Koyxeи Dance Classics Volumes on PAN are his ongoing development of his more dance oriented material, as seen from his sets with Sensational and also his other minimal techno project NHK.

GABOR LAZAR

Gábor Lázár is a sound artist living and working in Budapest, Hungary. He studied electronic music and media arts at University of Pécs. Gábor’s works are real time recordings of speci c combinations of synthesis and compositional techniques.

Online music retailer Boomkat describes his latest release, as “Combining viscerally a ective electronic timbre and hyperkinetic patterns, [the pieces on EP16] are real-time recordings of Gábor extracting maximum funk from a single note rendered as sheer gradients pitched and punctuated with unique, algorithmic meters.

MARK FELL

Mark Fell is a multi-disciplinary artist based in She eld, UK. In 1998, he initiated a series of critically ac- claimed record releases, featuring both collaborative (under the SND moniker) and solo works, on labels such as Mille Plateaux, Line, Editions Mego, Raster Noton and Alku.

Fell is widely known for combining popular music styles, such as electronica and techno, with more academic approaches to computer-based composition with a particular emphasis on algorithmic and mathemati-
cal systems. His recent musical practice has become increasingly informed by non-Western musics, this is evident in two linked works Multistability and UL8 which explore a number of unfamiliar timing and tuning systems.

LORENZO SENNI

Lorenzo Senni, who coined the term “Pointillistic Trance” to de ne his approach on Quantum Jelly, has been described as a sadistic scientist who is “ripping the spinal cord out of trance and dangling it in front of our eyes”. This Italian musician produced one of the unique electronic albums of recent years Quantum Jelly (Editions Mego) and also has releases on Boomkat Editions and his own Presto!? label.

His work explores the idea of the “build-up” found in euphoric dance music (notably Trance) as a starting point to produce a non-uplifting, introspective pieces which implicitly preserve the emotional tension and drama of more familiar dance- oor forms. His music often begins with one simple idea or musical pattern, slow developing into a sonic spiral of percussive, endlessly contagious, arpeggiated melodies.
